UnKaged K9 Story

Let us find you the right method plan to overcome any challenge.

Kim Ventiere is the owner and master trainer for UnKaged K9. She has been in the industry for over 10 years, where she has acquired a tremendous amount of knowledge in breeding and raising puppies for pet owners as well as training and raising dogs for careers and sports such as service and guide dogs, therapy dogs, frisbee, tricks, protection, and agility. Kim went from raising German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois for police style work to providing dogs to help people with disabilities with the Guide Dog Foundation and America’s VetDogs. Working with dogs for specific tasks has provided Kim with the ability to handle an incredibly wide range of behaviors, temperaments and challenges that most pet owners have trouble with. Kim dedicated her time not only working with these dogs but studying the psychology of why and how dogs learn. This unique skill set will be able to turn any problematic dog into a well behaved citizen not only in your home, but also in public. Kim’s main goal and focus is not only to train dogs but to teach owners how to communicate with their pups, which in turn will create a healthier family dynamic.

  • Fact: Puppies and dogs will often look to get into trouble out of boredom. I will help you come up with a structured routine that will prevent your pup from getting in trouble unless in a controlled environment where we are able to correct and redirect the pup to show them how to make healthy choices. Keep in mind that structure is different then routine.
  • Fact: mental stimulation is just as exhausting, if not more then physical exercise. Doing 10 minutes of pup push ups, which consist of a series of sit, down and stand in the same place will help you mentally tire your pup out.
  • Fact: Pups learn in the order of physical, visual than verbal, to properly communicate what you are teaching you’ll combine all three then take away the physical, then visual to get to a verbal response. The leash is the best way to combine all three components. I will teach you the 4 positions of the leash and how the leash works. This will help you learn to communicate, redirect, and reinforce the cues you asked to get the disciplined behaviors you are looking for.
  • Fact: There is a big difference in a pet dog and a working dog. It is important to identify where your pup is in that. It is okay to have a pup who needs a job. Chances are they will still be okay in your home, however a dog that needs to work will require more mental stimulation. Lack of mental stimulation can cause destructive, impulsive behaviors and even aggression. The job you give your pup can be strict obedience that you use to play fetch. An example would be modified retrieve (heel, wait, throw ball, bring, dog goes gets the ball and brings it to you, out, then back to heel).
  • Fact: Positive reinforcement is not always food, it can be whatever your dog finds valuable, whether it’s food, toys, or affection.. I will teach you how to properly reward when your pup does something right, and then how to correct and redirect to make your unwanted behaviors less likely by using the other three possibilities of learning which is negative reinforcement, positive punishment, and negative punishment, Don’t get thrown off by the words of positive and negative either. Both positive and negative reinforcement make your behaviors more likely and both positive and negative punishment make your behaviors less likely. To correct unwanted behaviors there needs to be a form of a consequence, followed by a positive. So Negative behavior + Negative consequence = Positive Outcome.
